Capturing the Moment

Enjoy the morning sunlight and learn from professional photographer Charles Phillips how to get that dazzling nature photograph. Early Birds

Join Len McKenzie or Lowell Young of the Yosemite Area Audubon Society for beginners’ bird walks. Discover the pleasures of identifying birds by sight and sound and watching their behavior. Bring binoculars if you have them and wear comfortable walking shoes. Call (209) 742-5579.

Going Native with Plants

Meet Kris Randal of the Mariposa County Resource Conservation District for short trail walks. Kris will interpret the native plants along the route, pointing out their drought-resistant qualities, their habitat values for wildlife, the importance of native bees as pollinators and how Native Americans used these plants. She will identify birds that frequent these habitats, emphasize the roles native plants play in the birds’ survival and offer ideas for gardening with native plants. Call (209) 966-3431.

Oak Tree Care

Kris Randal of the Mariposa County Resource Conservation District will share her knowledge of caring for the foothills’ native oaks in a one-hour slide presentation. Learn about the habitat values of oaks, protecting them and how they enhance property values. Call (209) 966-3431.

Mariposa’s Flying Jewels

Join local residents Barbara and Duane Robinson of the Hummingbird Monitoring Network for a one-hour slide presentation about their work studying and banding hummingbirds during these tiny birds’ migrations along the Pacific Flyway. You’ll marvel about the long journeys of the world’s smallest birds and learn why Barbara and Duane and their volunteers have banded more hummers than any other site in the network. Watercolor Painting Demonstration

Artist Sharon Bortugno will paint spring flowers and demonstrate watercolor techniques on special art paper. A painter for 12 years, Sharon teaches painting (“therapy for your mind and soul”) and art technique at her home studio in Oakhurst. She shows students how to use their “artist eye” to see colors, shapes and values of light. Paint along with her or just observe. Call (559)683-4032

Windwalkers – Location 1

Harry Clarke will share his knowledge of designing and building houses for various bird species, bats, butterflies and barn owls.  Learn why different designs work for different species.  Houses will be available for purchase.  Call (209) 966-7865.

Planting and Painting – Location 3

Transplant a native tree from a seedbed to a gallon container or a flower to a cup.  Or create a pet rock with paint, craft supplies and cobblestone ( provided).  For kids of all ages.  Call (209) 742-5004.

Goat Milk SoapLocation 6

Madelyn McGrath of Goat Garden Soap will demonstrate and explain the process of converting fats to finished bars of soap using goat’s milk and lye.  Hourly demonstrations will last about 15-20 minutes.  Soaps will be available for purchase.  Call (209) 966-4250.

California Native Plant Demonstration Garden - Mariposa Creek Parkway

The Mariposa Master Gardeners have developed a California Native Plant Demonstration Garden along the Mariposa Creek Parkway.  Having planned and planted the site with native plants and identification markers, they now maintain the area.  The Master Gardeners are currently participating in a research project with the University of California, Davis, to evaluate the adaptability of various native plants to growing conditions in Mariposa County.

Enjoy a stroll along the walkway.  Master Gardeners will be available all weekend to answer questions.  Park in the public lot on 5th Street west of Hwy 140 in downtown Mariposa or on Stroming Road.
